Sinta Tantra British-Indonesian, b. 1979

Sinta Tantra, a British artist of Balinese descent, was born in New York in 1979. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (1999–2003), and at the Royal Academy Schools London (2004–2006). Known for her site-specific murals and installations, Tantra has been commissioned for works like Lee Tung Avenue, Hong Kong (2018); Facebook London (2018); Folkestone Triennial (2017); and the 2012 Olympic bridge at Canary Wharf, London. Her vibrant, large-scale pieces transform urban environments through bold, abstract color schemes that blend seamlessly with architecture, illustrating her philosophy of “painting on an architectural scale.”

Tantra’s work explores the intersection between painting and architecture, as well as the dynamics between public and private spaces. Ranging from small canvases to monumental installations, her art blends elements of pop and formalism, with tropical palettes juxtaposed against minimalist forms. This unique approach creates immersive experiences that blur the boundaries of two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces. Her practice frequently “turns the inside out,” inviting viewers to engage physically and visually with spaces that heighten a sense of fantasy while questioning the functional and decorative roles of art.
