WHAT’S ON ISA ART GALLERY IN OCTOBER, 2026
UPCOMING
ISA Art Gallery at Art KL, Kuala Lumpur

15 – 18 October 2026
Kumsung Cultural Space (KCS Space), Seoul
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce our participation in Art KL, presenting Little Worlds, Fleeting Things, a duo presentation bringing together works by Dabi Arnasa and Luh’De Gita around memory, fragments, and imagination. Taking place from 15 – 18 October, ART KL is a new platform for Southeast Asian art that places younger and emerging artists at the center of the region’s artistic landscape. The presentation explores the unstable relationship between what is lived and what remains, considering how memory is continually reconstructed through fragments, associations, and imagination.
The artists approach this idea through distinct practices. Arnasa transforms fragments of everyday life into miniature, dream-like landscapes, disrupting familiar spatial relationships and allowing ordinary objects and experiences to take on new meanings. Meanwhile, Luh’De Gita layers archival and personal imagery to reflect on Bali’s shifting landscapes, cultural memory, fantasy, tourism, and environmental change. Together, their works occupy a space between recognition and invention, where fragments of lived experience can be reassembled into new worlds.

ONGOING
Paper Menagerie #3: On Equal Grounds

19 September – 27 November 2026
ISA Art Gallery at Wisma 46, Central Jakarta
Entering its second month, Paper Menagerie #3: On Equal Grounds presents the practices of 63 Indonesian artists, collectives, performers, and art researchers. The exhibition brings together three generations of practitioners, spanning a wide range of approaches to artmaking and ways of engaging with paper.
At the heart of the exhibition is the idea of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), treating paper as more than a medium to consider how it can create a space for different voices, perspectives, and forms of knowledge to encounter one another. Across printmaking, archival materials, drawing, maps, collage, painting, and three-dimensional works, paper carries memories, histories, ideas, and gestures across different contexts and generations.
Paper Menagerie #3: On Equal Grounds does not seek to flatten the differences between these practices. Instead, it brings them together without placing them within a fixed hierarchy, allowing their distinct perspectives to remain visible while entering into dialogue with one another. In this shared space, paper becomes a common ground through which different generations, disciplines, and ways of thinking can encounter one another.

S. Teddy for Sumba

23 September – 23 October 2026
NODE by ISA Art & Design
Continuing through October, S. Teddy for Sumba brings together works by S. Teddy D., Ahadi Bintang, Bonggal Hutagalung, Jumaadi, Sillyndris, Trio Muharam, and Zikry Rediansyah, reflecting on Teddy’s connection to Sumba and his longstanding commitment to supporting children through education. Organised by ISA Art & Design Consultancy in collaboration with Happy Hearts Indonesia, the charity exhibition is held in memory of Indonesian artist S. Teddy D.
Teddy travelled to Sumba several times, developing a deep appreciation for the island, its animistic traditions, and its communities. During these visits, he envisioned using the proceeds from his paintings to contribute towards the construction of a school on the island. S. Teddy for Sumba carries this intention forward through a collaboration with Happy Hearts Indonesia, with proceeds from the sale of Teddy’s works supporting the organisation’s school rebuilding project in Southwest Sumba. The initiative aims to raise USD 25,000 towards the reconstruction of a preschool.
The exhibition also presents works by Ahadi Bintang, Bonggal Hutagalung, Jumaadi, Sillyndris, Trio Muharam, and Zikry Rediansyah, whose contributions accompany Teddy’s works in this tribute to his life and artistic practice. By carrying forward his wish to support the construction of a school in Sumba, the initiative honors his legacy through tangible support for children’s education.

ISA ARTIST ON THE MOVE
LUH’DE GITA

Nostalgi = Transendensi
9 October – 9 December 2026
Museum Pasifika, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce Luh’De Gita’s participation in Nostalgi = Transendensi at Museum Pasifika, Bali. Bringing together women artists from across the Asia-Pacific region and different generations, the exhibition explores how memories, identities, traditions, and artistic practices are carried across time and transformed through new experiences. Rather than viewing the past as something fixed, Nostalgi = Transendensi considers how what is inherited can be remembered, reinterpreted, and given new meaning.
Luh’De’s participation reflects her ongoing engagement with memory, cultural identity, and the changing landscapes of Bali. Working with archival and personal imagery, she brings together inherited representations of the island with contemporary experience, creating a space where collective and personal memories intersect. Her practice resonates with the exhibition’s exploration of how the past continues to shape the present, while also allowing established images of place and culture to be reconsidered. Through this process, memory becomes not only a record of what has been, but a starting point for imagining how identities, landscapes, and histories might be understood differently.

JUMAADI

20 – 24 October 2026
Asia NOW
Monnaie de Paris
This October, Jumaadi will participate in the 12th edition of Asia NOW, taking place at the Monnaie de Paris from 20–24 October 2026. As a platform dedicated to amplifying artistic voices from Asia and its diaspora, Asia NOW continues to challenge established perspectives and consider Asia not simply as a geography, but as a space of exchange, movement, and connection.
Jumaadi’s participation resonates with this approach. Having moved from East Java to Australia in 1997, his practice is shaped by an ongoing dialogue between different places, histories, and cultural traditions. Drawing from personal memory, folklore, dreams, and ancestral narratives, his works bring together human and animal figures, landscapes, and fragments of stories that move between the familiar and the imagined. His use of materials such as buffalo hide, traditionally associated with wayang kulit, further connects his contemporary practice to inherited forms of storytelling and cultural memory.
Through these works, Jumaadi explores how stories and traditions can travel, transform, and acquire new meanings across places and generations. His practice reflects the complexity of belonging between cultures, while creating a space where different histories and experiences can encounter one another.

ARAHMAIANI

Angels and Mara
29 October 2026 – 28 February 2027
Bangkok, Thailand
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce Arahmaiani’s participation in the fifth edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB), Angels and Mara, taking place across multiple locations in Bangkok in 2026. Led by chief executive and artistic director Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda alongside curators Adulaya Hoontrakul, Rémy Jarry, Melanie Pocock, and Kulapat Yantrasast, the biennale brings together 72 artists and collectives to consider the tensions between opposing forces and the spaces that emerge between them. Drawing on the figures of angels and Mara across different religious and cosmological traditions, the exhibition reflects on the complexities of good and bad, light and darkness, and the shifting boundaries between these states.
As one of Indonesia’s most influential contemporary artists, Arahmaiani has developed a multidisciplinary practice that engages with social, political, cultural, and spiritual structures. As one of the leading figures in Southeast Asian performance art since the 1980s, her work has continually explored questions of identity, belief, power, and the systems that shape our lives. Her participation in Angels and Mara reflects the continued relevance of these concerns, bringing her longstanding engagement with spirituality, belief, and opposing forces into dialogue with an international group of artists and a broader conversation around morality and human experience.

AARON TAYLOR KUFFNER

Gamelatron, Sonic Immersion
1 September – 10 October 2026
The Dome (Upper Level), Yale Schwarzman Center
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce Gamelatron, Sonic Immersion, a sound installation by Aaron Taylor Kuffner in the dome of the Yale Schwarzman Center. Ten freestanding kinetic sculptures carry 36 hand-tuned bronze and steel gongs, struck by mechanical mallets run by a computer system. Kuffner composes long, nonlinear pieces with no fixed start or end, so visitors can come and go at any point. The work draws partly on Indonesia's gamelan tradition, which Kuffner studied at a university in Indonesia. The installation opened September 1 and is open Tuesday to Saturday afternoons through October 10, 2026.
The work draws in part from the Indonesian gamelan tradition, which Kuffner studied during his time at university in Indonesia. His Gamelatron sculptures extend this musical tradition through kinetic sculpture and technology, transforming instruments into an evolving mechanical orchestra.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT

This October, ISA Art Gallery is pleased to highlight Ardi Gunawan, whose practice moves between painting and sculpture to explore images, objects, and the ways they are transformed through acts of making. Working with found images, everyday materials, and remnants from his surroundings, Ardi explores how familiar things can be altered, reassembled, and given new significance.
For Art Jakarta 2026, Ardi Gunawan presents works as part of ISA Art Gallery’s presentation, Invisible Cities: Worlds Within Worlds. Across his paintings and sculpture, he embraces processes of translation, transformation, and experimentation. His paintings often begin with images encountered online, which move through sketches and reinterpretation before becoming physical paintings. His sculpture similarly brings together leftover materials, childhood objects, craft remnants, and accessories, turning seemingly insignificant fragments into strange, hybrid forms. Across these works, Ardi embraces imperfection and unpredictability, allowing material and image to shift between the familiar and the unexpected.
His practice reflects on how images and objects can carry different meanings as they move between contexts. Through repetition, reworking, and accumulation, Ardi transforms everyday fragments into new forms, inviting us to look again at things that might otherwise be overlooked.
