WHAT’S ON ISA ART GALLERY IN SEPTEMBER, 2026
UPCOMING
ISA Art Gallery at PAVILION Seoul

1 – 6 September 2026
Kumsung Cultural Space (KCS Space), Seoul
ISA Art Gallery is proud to announce our inclusion in the inaugural edition of PAVILION Seoul, presenting Betwixt and Between, bringing together works by Alexander Sebastianus, Chintia Kirana, Jumaadi, and Sinta Tantra around the theme of liminality. Taking place from 1–6 September 2026, this marks ISA Art Gallery’s first participation in Seoul and an important milestone in the gallery’s growing international programme. The exhibition explores states of transition, where materials, images, and cultural forms exist between defined categories while retaining traces of what came before. Through processes of weaving, burning, recontextualization, and shifts between color, surface, and space, the works consider how transformation allows these traces to persist in new forms.
The artists approach this idea through distinct practices. Sebastianus reworks images and material cultures through weaving and recontextualization, examining displacement, circulation, and material memory. Kirana works with ash, carbon residue, and oxidation to explore the relationship between presence, absence, and material transformation. Jumaadi works with buffalo hide, a material traditionally used for wayang kulit puppets, bringing its cultural and material history into dialogue with his own visual language. This exploration of material and form continues in Tantra’s practice where color, light, and geometric forms challenge the boundaries between painting and physical space.
Together, the works present liminality as an active state of transformation, where the past remains present through materials, images, and cultural forms as they take on new configurations.

Opening on Saturday, 19 September 2026, this exhibition spans three generations of Indonesian artists, placing diverse practices and perspectives into dialogue. Drawing from Hannah Arendt’s proposition that “the world lies between people,” the exhibition considers paper not simply as a material or surface, but as a space where different perspectives and forms of knowledge can coexist without hierarchy.
Across drawings, paintings, collages, archives, maps, and three-dimensional works, paper becomes a site of memory, exchange, and encounter. Its capacity to preserve and circulate ideas across time and generations allows diverse practices to enter into dialogue, while its accessibility and reproducibility position it as a material capable of carrying voices, histories, and forms of resistance.
Rather than erasing distinctions between artistic practices, Paper Menagerie #3: On Equal Grounds questions the hierarchies through which they are understood, allowing different disciplines to coexist without being placed in a fixed order of value. Paper then becomes a shared territory where different disciplines, generations, and ways of thinking can meet, allowing new relationships and possibilities to emerge.

S. Teddy for Sumba

23 September – 23 October 2026
NODE by ISA Art & Design
ISA Art & Design Consultancy, in collaboration with Happy Hearts Indonesia, is pleased to present S. Teddy for Sumba, a charity exhibition held in memory of Indonesian artist S. Teddy D. The exhibition brings together works by S. Teddy D., Ahadi Bintang, Bonggal Hutagalung, Jumaadi, Sillyndris, Trio Muharam, and Zikry Rediansyah, reflecting on Teddy’s artistic practice, his connection to Sumba, and his enduring commitment to supporting children through education.
Having traveled to Sumba several times, Teddy developed a deep appreciation for the island, its animistic traditions, and its communities. Inspired by these experiences, he envisioned using the proceeds from his paintings to support the construction of a school in Sumba. S. Teddy for Sumba continues this vision, with proceeds from the sale of S. Teddy’s works supporting Happy Hearts Indonesia’s school rebuilding project in Southwest Sumba, with a fundraising goal of USD 25,000 to rebuild a preschool.
Alongside Teddy’s works, the exhibition features works by Ahadi Bintang, Bonggal Hutagalung, Jumaadi, Sillyndris, Trio Muharam, and Zikry Rediansyah, bringing their distinct perspectives into dialogue with Teddy’s practice and legacy. A Blur is a Memory

11 July – 11 September 2026
ISA Art Gallery at Wisma 46, Central Jakarta
Entering its final weeks at ISA Art Gallery, A Blur is a Memory continues to challenge the increasing reliance on technology through the paintings and etchings of Luh’de Gita and Etza Meisyara. Their works show how fleeting experiences can remain through material traces, positioning the blur as a form of remembering rather than forgetting; this creates a space where memory and possibility converge, and ways of seeing can be reconsidered.
Luh’De Gita’s practice looks at how Bali’s landscapes and cultural identities are reshaped by tourism and development, bringing together archival imagery, personal photographs, and fragments of everyday life. Her use of cropping, layering, and muted color disrupts familiar images of Bali as a tropical paradise, drawing attention to details and histories that are often overlooked. In contrast, Etza Meisyara works through sound, movement, and performance, translating these fleeting experiences into etched surfaces and mixed-media installations. Her series, “Sonic Gesture”, captures the resonance that remains in the body after an encounter with music, creating visual traces of something that cannot be physically held. Together, their practices consider how memory is continually formed and re-formed through what we see, hear, experience, and choose to remember.

ISA ARTIST ON THE MOVE
JUMAADI

Traces
22 August – 26 September 2026
Erin Cluley Gallery, Dallas, United States
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce Jumaadi’s participation in Traces, a group exhibition at Erin Cluley Gallery in Dallas that brings together an international group of artists working across photography, painting, and sculpture. This exhibition explores how our understanding of place is shaped through physical and embodied experience, considering how movement, cultural identity, and lived experience influence the ways people relate to and experience the spaces around them.
Jumaadi’s participation reflects his longstanding engagement with Indonesian cultural traditions, particularly through his use of wayang kulit, the traditional Javanese shadow-puppet practice. His shadow puppets depict scenes of love, relationships, and spiritualism, carrying stories and traditions through a form deeply rooted in Javanese culture. Within Traces, his work contributes to the exhibition’s exploration of how cultural knowledge and personal narratives are carried through the body, material, and place.
Through the exhibition, Jumaadi’s practice is presented alongside artists whose works similarly examine movement, memory, and cultural identity, placing his engagement with Javanese storytelling within a broader international dialogue around how traditions evolve and remain present across changing contexts.

What the Body Remembers
11 September – 29 November 2026
Labyrinth Art Gallery, Nuanu Creative City, Bali, Indonesia
Alexander Sebastianus will be participating in What the Body Remembers, an exhibition presented by Art & Bali, featuring artists, designers, and makers from Indonesia and India who explore how memory is embodied through the body, the hand, and the process of making.
Through contemporary art, fashion, textiles, craft, and material culture, the exhibition explores the way memory, knowledge, and cultural traditions travel through the body and are passed down through touch, repetition, ritual, and exchange. Framed through the themes Hand as Archive and Routes of Exchange, exploring how materials, techniques, and traditions travel and evolve across people, places, and generations, while continuing to carry the stories and histories embedded within them.
Through his participation, Sebastianus brings his research into material culture, textiles, and embodied knowledge into conversation with artists and makers from Indonesia and India. His experience as an apprentice to a Javanese master weaver in East Java continues to shape his practice, alongside his interest in ritual, craft, and Sani, a way of living grounded in offering, service, and the search for the unknown. Being part of What the Body Remembers gives Sebastianus an opportunity to share this practice with a wider audience and further establish his work within contemporary art and craft.

IDA LAWRENCE

To Pass from One Dream to Another
19 September – 13 December 2026
Lyon Biennale, Lyon, France
ISA Art Gallery is pleased to announce that Ida Lawrence will present her work at the 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, To Pass from One Dream to Another, curated by Catherine Nichols and directed by Isabelle Bertolotti.
Bringing together painting, writing, and storytelling, Lawrence’s practice explores memory, kinship, and cultural inheritance. Her layered works consider how stories and histories are transmitted, translated, and rewritten across generations and languages.
Her participation resonates with the Biennale’s focus on movement between different perceptions and collective imaginaries. Like the Biennale’s emphasis on passage and transformation, Lawrence’s practice considers how stories change as they move between people, cultures, and contexts, opening new ways of imagining belonging. Presented within this significant international platform, her work reaches a wider audience and further establishes her practice within the international contemporary art landscape.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT

This September, ISA Art Gallery is pleased to highlight Hadassah Emmerich, a Brussels-based artist whose practice spans painting, works on paper, and installation. Her work explores identity, the body, representations of the exotic, and the tension between abstraction and figuration. Drawing from vintage photography, texts, advertisements, and art history, Emmerich combines photomontage with painting and printing techniques to create layered compositions shaped by diverse visual influences.
Emmerich is currently presenting Twisting Thriving Topographies, a solo exhibition at the Erasmus Gallery in Rotterdam, on view from 24 August to 11 December 2026. The exhibition continues ideas developed through her large-scale mural of the same title, created in 2025 and 2026 across two stairwells of the Langeveld building at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Using related materials, colors, and techniques, the exhibition brings painting into dialogue with material and architecture, further extending Emmerich’s exploration of organic forms, patterns, color, and layered surfaces beyond the traditional canvas.
From 1 to 28 September 2026, Emmerich will also undertake an artist residency at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. The residency supports artists in sustaining their creative practices and encourages experimentation across print, digital media, installation, photography, and other disciplines. This approach resonates with Emmerich’s practice, which brings together painting and printing alongside imagery drawn from photography, texts, advertisements, and art history. Kala’s emphasis on working across disciplines and exploring the relationship between digital and handmade processes offers a relevant context for Emmerich to continue developing the layered and material approach that characterizes her work. The residency also places her within a community that values artistic exchange and experimentation, building on the range of influences that shape her practice.
