This is the only painting in HOARSE HORSE that contains no visible animals, yet it may be the most animalistic of all. In this work, Lawrence imagines what the canvas might look like if an animal had broken loose inside her studio, leaving behind a trail of instinctive gestures rather than a recognisable form. The marks are urgent, restless, and unmediated. It could depict claws, scrapes, or the chaotic energy of a creature in motion. Without a visualized animal, the question turns back onto the maker: are these the traces of an imagined beast, or of the artist herself slipping into something feral?
