NO FUN NO JOY takes its cue from a common German sign depicting two cheerful, cartoon-like dogs crossed out. Lawrence became interested in the ambiguity of what exactly is being prohibited. Are dogs not allowed? Or companionship? Playfulness? Joy itself? The sign’s sweetness, paired with its firm negation, creates a strange tension, one that feels both humorous and quietly oppressive.
