The sentence 'And do you know how I knew it was a fox who’d stolen my shoes?' emerged from an offhand remark made by Lawrence’s friend Karla. The original context of their conversation has since slipped from memory, yet the sentence lingered. Its odd specificity opening a small imaginative rift. Lawrence recalls drifting away the moment she heard it, picturing a fox padding off in a pair of human shoes. This becomes a point of entry into her interest in misinterpretation and the way images are sparked by language slightly askew.
