This painting reflects how Balinese bodies have long been imagined as part of the island's scenery. Painted from an archival photograph, the figure gradually dissolves into the palm tree and the soft reflections becomes inseparable from the image of paradise itself. Rather than portraying a person, the painting questions how colonial photography and tourism have transformed people into symbols of hospitality where identity is absorbed into the landscape.
