Just Dance borrows its title from 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga, specifically when she sings “Just Dance, everything is gonna be alright”. To Luh'De, that optimism sits in contrast with the history behind the image. It’s highly irrational how Balinese people are expected to “perform” in colonial times especially during the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition, where the performance of a 51-member Balinese troupe is staged and consumed as entertainment, even though there was a fire on site (performers continued performing two days after the fire broke out). The tension where dance can be both a living cultural practice and a performance shaped by the expectations of others are parallels in our todays life.
