‘A House in Bali’ was first exhibited by ISA Art and Design for Sinta Tantra’s solo show of the same name in 2017. The show and the works were inspired by Colin McPhee, a Canadian composer who wrote a book titled A House in Bali in 1946. This book was McPhee’s discoveries during his voyage to the island of Bali where he first experienced the traditional Balinese gamelan. After visiting Bali, he returned to his home country and tried to combine Balinese gamelan and western music as his roots. The result was proved seminal in popularizing Balinese gamelan music in the West. Mcphee’s discovery of the rich and astonishing culture of Bali was then beautifully translated into Tantra’s ‘A House in Bali’ series.
