I make paper from the wooden sleeper of colonial sugar factory lorry rail, an artifact that burdens the memory of Dutch colonial extraction and Japanese imperialism's harsh human exploitation that took the life of my grandfather. I see paper making here as a way to decompress its material's memory; to release of what the railway once compressed: lives, labor, and loss. Making paper is also a way of rewriting history on the material that erased it. The iron dust stays on the paper comes from the corroded sugar lorry rail, tells the same story.
