Resort of Ghosts is a double sided painting that juxtaposes two images of old and new Bali that often occupy the same space in today's practice of hospitality. Luh'De wants the audiences to consider how landscapes, cultural practices, and collective memory are transformed through processes of development and overconsumption. What remains visible when a place is constantly shaped by the desires of outsiders (tourists), how does one feel to inhabit landscapes that have been repurposed, commodified, and transformed to fit a specific group of people. She uses pis kepeng because it's proof of cultural exchange between Bali and the Chinese in the past. Luh'De aims to materialize the long history of movement, migration and exchange that shaped Bali now and also challenge romantic notions of a pure/isolated Balinese identity.
