Overview

A.D. Pirous, was born in Meulaboh, Nanggro Aceh Darussalam, on March 11, 1932, AD Pirous stands as one of Indonesia’s most esteemed living artists. Alongside M. Sadali, Mochtar Apin, and But Mochtar, Pirous is recognized as one of the pioneers of Indonesian abstract art. His artistic journey, spanning several decades, has been marked by the creation of boldly geometric images in vibrant colors, often adorned with gold leaf and brilliant turquoise since the early 1970s.

 

Regarded as a trailblazer, AD Pirous is credited with seamlessly blending Western abstraction with traditional Islamic forms and themes, particularly Koranic calligraphy, which conveys sacred verses from the Quran. Through his paintings, Pirous encapsulates the timeless relevance of Arabic calligraphy, presenting religious messages from ancient times that resonate both in the present and future. His work serves as a testament to his role in bridging cultural and artistic worlds, contributing significantly to the rich tapestry of Indonesian art.
