ARIE SMIT
IN A BALI VILLAGE (THREE VILLAGERS), 1990
Acrylic on Canvas
28.5 X 31.5 cm
Bali Village is also one of Arie Smit’s most prevalent subject matter. Arie have paints these
subjects not as a story far-away but as a subject that is close to his daily reality. Arie does not like
to stay in the limelight, or prestigious area, but rather remote villages in Bali. The temple and
villagers are painted in his signature naive style, a merger between pointillist-impressionist style
and the local aesthetic of Indonesia. The temple was painted in breathtaking mosaics of colour. It
is clad in orange and yellow hues surrounded against a fuchsia sky, a visible embodiment of Arie’s
trust in his his feelings.
