This work stems from an exploration of the ecological changes of the Citarum River through A. J. Payen’s travel archives. In 1819, Payen spent approximately two weeks in Cipatik, documenting the Citarum landscape, including Curug Jompong. More than two hundred years later, this past landscape is encountered through a colonial archive. What Payen could once see and experience directly has become something difficult to access—a landscape that can now only be approached through the images, notes, and traces preserved in the archive.

The archive raises questions about how a landscape becomes knowledge. Payen’s arrival is situated within a colonial context in which territories were studied, described, recorded, and mapped through practices of knowledge production that were also connected to the identification and exploitation of resources. At the same time, the Citarum of today has undergone significant ecological change. Pollution and changing river conditions have widened the distance between the landscape Payen documented and the landscape that can be experienced today. The colonial archive therefore becomes a paradox: it preserves an image of a place that remains geographically close, while revealing something that can no longer be directly accessed.

This exploration led to Tarum (Indigofera tinctoria), a plant associated with the origin of the name Citarum. Tarum was once a source of indigo dye and part of the colonial commodity trade connected to the European textile industry. Today, the plant that gave the river its name is no longer easily found within the Citarum landscape. Tarum, recycled paper, and cyanotype are used to reproduce landscape images from Payen’s archive. These remaining and lost materials become a means of reconnecting the history of the river with a memory that has become increasingly difficult to access.

The work is an attempt to approach a memory that remains preserved, yet has become increasingly distant from direct experience. By bringing archival images together with materials connected to the history of the Citarum, the work considers how a landscape can change while its memory persists in other forms—in archives, plants, paper, color, and material remains."
