“Song of the Rainbow in Blue” is an abstract exploration that depicts vibrant, bold shapes and colors set against a vivid blue background. The piece features a series of interconnected shapes in bright hues of orange, green, yellow, and purple. These shapes bear the flowing forms of Jawi script (in Javanese term: Arab Gundul / Arab Pegon script, in English term: Malay Arabic script)– which is a writing system adapted and acculturated from the Arabic script to write the Malay language. It includes additional characters to represent sounds unique to Malay. Historically, Jawi has been used in Southeast Asia—particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and parts of the southern Philippines—for religious texts, literature, and official documentation The Jawi script effectively illustrates the acculturation of local culture, demonstrating how it integrates and synthesizes multiple cultural influences into a cohesive expression.
