Arahmaiani uses stark contrasts and minimalistic elements to create a narrative that is both specific and universal. The black clouds of smoke serve as a metaphor for the spreading nature of social issues, while the small, isolated buildings and vehicles emphasize the individual impact of broader societal conflicts. "May Riot" is a poignant reflection on the Indonesian May 1998 riots, capturing the tension, devastation, and enduring consequences of one of the most tumultuous periods in Indonesia's history.
The third panel shows the black cloud dominating the composition, overwhelming the smaller, more detailed elements of a helicopter, a vehicle, and a distant dome-like structure. This symbolizes the peak of the riots, where chaos was overwhelming, and the government's response was insufficient to contain the violence. The helicopter hints at the military and police efforts to restore order amidst the turmoil.
