"The 8th Papaya (Infinity Papaya) continues Hadassah Emmerich’s long-standing fascination with the papaya as a recurring motif within her work. Moving between figuration and abstraction, the fruit becomes more than a recognizable object: it transforms into a sensual and spatial form that evokes the body, ornament and landscape simultaneously.
The vertically opened papaya at the center of the composition functions almost like a window into an inner world. Its dense, seed-filled core suggests both organic fertility and endless repetition, echoing the work’s subtitle Infinity Papaya. At the same time, the image recalls the seductive visual language of exotic fruit juice packaging and advertising — glossy, promise-filled images in which tropical fruit becomes a projection of pleasure, abundance and desire. This subtle pop-cultural undertone introduces a tension between organic sensuality and constructed fantasy.
Around the central form, leaf-like and ribbon-shaped elements unfold and intertwine in a layered choreography of reflections, gradients and shifting surfaces. Metallic and organic elements merge throughout the composition, bringing together references to tropical flora, decorative traditions and modernist abstraction. These layered visual languages are also connected to Emmerich’s personal background as an artist of mixed European and Indonesian descent.
The painting is built up through Emmerich’s characteristic process of hand-printing paint through cut vinyl stencils, allowing motifs to be repeated, mirrored and transformed across the surface. Combined with more gestural painted passages, this technique creates a dynamic interplay between precision and fluidity, flatness and depth, resulting in a richly layered and immersive image.
