"Cabbages & Hortus Conclusus both came out of a series of paintings around the enclosed garden and its associations with the inner life and the feminine. My work always seems to play with these themes, but I wanted to directly address them with symbols around the garden like wattled fencing, medicinal and symbolic flowers and cabbages, a vegetable associated with babies and fermentation across cultures.

In all of the paintings, I have used the self-portrait but with less focus on the portrait and more play with the narrative around the figure."
