"This piece by Jumaadi, titled ""Ranjang Pengantin"" (The Bridal Bed), depicts a stylized, almost whimsical scene with strong symbolic elements. The artwork features two figures lying side by side on a bed, enclosed within a structure that resembles a house. Above them, a tree with branching limbs and fruit or flower-like forms fills the space, suggesting themes of growth, fertility, and life.
The tree's branches and the house structure blend together, creating a harmonious and interconnected composition. The figures on the bed are rendered in a simplified, almost naïve style, with a sense of peace and intimacy. The use of gold and green hues, along with intricate patterns, adds a rich, decorative quality to the piece.
Jumaadi's practice is informed by personal experience as well as the political and aesthetic lineages of his homeland, including the Javanese and Balinese tradition of wayang kulit (shadow-puppet plays). Through a poetic sensibility and subtle symbolism, Jumaadi weaves a personal iconography of human and organic motifs to explore universal themes such as love, conflict, and belonging."
