Teguh Ostenrik Indonesian, b. 1950
Overview
The artist, Teguh Ostenrik, graduated his Masters in Fine Arts from the Hochschule der Kuenste, Berlin (West), Germany. For more than 40 years of work, Teguh has exhibited at home and abroad, such as the USA, Europe (France, Netherlands, Germany), Australia, and several Asian countries. His works cover various media: paintings, sculptures, terracotta, installation works, video art, dance choreography, stage setting, and have become private collections and institutions such as Willem de Kooning Studio – USA, St. Mary of the Angels Church – Singapore, The Cross on the Tomohon Prayer Hill – North Sulawesi, Fukuoka Art Museum – Japan. The emphasis of Teguh's works is based on his appreciation for mother earth. He often uses recycled materials or earth colors. In May 2014, Teguh initiated the ARTificial Reef Park in Lombok, Indonesia, a project that placed underwater installations as a medium for coral to grow and at the same time creates a new diving destination. To date, 12 ARTificial Reef structures have been placed in Wakatobi – South Sulawesi, Sepa Island – Kepulauan Seribu Jakarta, Bangka Island, North Sulawesi. The one in Ternate – North Maluku was deployed underwater after it was exhibited for one month at ARTJOG 2019, Yogyakarta, and the 10th installation was placed at Bangsring Banyuwangi - East Java in December 2020. The last one was deployed in May 2023 in Bondalem, North Bali. In 2017, Teguh presented to the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, an installation using four original segments of the 3.6 meters high Berlin Wall equipped with 13 human figures made of iron plates. The idea, which has only been realized in 27 years, is intended as a narrative work that will always remind humanity not to repeat the human tragedy. It is time for this nation to "Breakthrough the Boundaries" of all existing fundamental differences, unite thoughts and actions for the sake of building the country.
