I wanted to capture the spirit of Gunawan both as a painter and a colourist. His signature viridian green overflows many of his canvases, punctuated by vibrant fields of ultramarine skies, magenta florals and golden yellows.

Much of Gunawan's work takes inspiration from the sea, the fluid movement of nature, its organic forms against human bodies and the landscape.

These recent paintings of mine use coral forms as motifs, merging figurative elements against an abstract geometric background.

I came to use the coral form as part of recollecting a memory from a souvenir I had. On top of my dressing room table at home, I have a collection of corals I picked up on the beaches of Nusa Penida, an island off Bali - a family holiday, a distant memory, made alive through touch
