Overview

Dolorosa Sinaga is a distinguished female sculptor with a rich and diverse background. She graduated from the Jakarta Arts Institute in 1977 and pursued further studies at prestigious institutions such as St. Petersburg Martin’s School of Art in London, Karnarija Lubliyana in Yugoslavia, and the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of Maryland in the United States.

 

Throughout her illustrious career, Dolorosa's sculptures have served as poignant narratives about women, embodying various themes such as illusion and loyalty, crisis, solidarity, multiculturalism, and the ongoing struggle against violence. Her exceptional contributions to the field have garnered numerous awards and recognition in Indonesia, including the Cultural Adhikarya Image Award and the 2009 Art Award from the Republic of Indonesia’s Government. In acknowledgment of her expertise and leadership, she was appointed Dean of the Jakarta Arts Institute.

 

Despite being in her 60s, Sinaga remains actively engaged socially, teaching classes at the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ), and undertaking various sculptural projects. For her, art is not merely a vocation but a means to express emotions, ease the mind, and, most importantly, a medium for social advancement. Committed to nurturing the next generation of sculptors, Dolorosa actively organizes exhibitions that showcase the works of young artists, emphasizing research methodology as a foundation for artistic exploration.
